Leiela Focus Interview – Karen Gee of Mrs Australia

Leiela have a proud history of supporting charity events – and in years of late have chosen to get behind the Mrs Australia Pageant. Far from being a ‘Toddlers in Tiaras’ or ‘Miss Universe’ style event, Mrs Australia rewards participants who have a strong bent towards charity and community participation. The Mrs Australia organisation supports W.I.N. (Women In Need International) who are committed to enhancing women’s emotional health, self esteem and the promotion of a healthy body image. Mrs Australia’s state finalists support W.I.N.’s goals which include running the ‘Raise Your Standards’ program for students throughout Australia.
Today Leiela are proud to feature the current Mrs Australia, Karen Gee. In her interview, Karen focuses on her charity of choice – The Butterfly Foundation, as well as her journey to becoming Mrs Australia. Read on!
1. How did you first hear about the Mrs Australia pageant, and had you ever participated in a pageant event before?

The first I heard about the Mrs Australia Pageant was when my amazing 13 year old son Oscar noticed it advertised. It wasn’t something I ever imaged myself entering! When I investigated the pageant and realised great emphasis was placed on inner beauty and being the best you can be, I decided to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone, to be a part of Women In Need Australia –  a truly wonderful charity founded by Dr Tracy Kemble in 1996.

2. Tell us about the Butterfly Foundation. What attract you towards this charity?

The Butterfly Foundation is Australia’s largest national charity supporting those with eating disorders and their carers.  It is an absolute priority to me to emphasise the importance of loving who you are – to live in a world that celebrates, health, well being and diversity.  Mrs Australia Globe promotes women discovering their inner beauty and focusing on the importance of oneself.

3. What kind of activities do you undertake in your role as Mrs Australia?

I have many roles as the current Mrs Australia Globe. I choose to ensure I align myself with people, businesses and corporations that have common goals and focus on things that I am passionate about.  At the moment I am part of the  BMW Sydney Carnival and my role as a face of the carnival has brought focus to Mrs Australia Globe, enabling me to reach out to millions and send a positive message. It has also allowed me to network with some incredible people and to be able to educate those on the importance of self esteem. Through being the face of BMW Sydney Carnival and Mrs Australia Globe, I have had the opportunity to speak in public, on TV and at media launches. I’ve been in Australia’s most recognised papers, presented prestigious awards and hosted an event that supports a nationally recognized charity.

4. You’ve worn your fair share of beautiful gowns – which is your favourite style from Leiela’s collections?

I feel fortunate to have worn some amazing gowns! Although it is always wonderful to do so, what I wear certainly does not define who I am or the message I deliver of intrinsic beauty. Every woman feels incredible when they wear a lovely gown, and I always embrace  and am grateful to those who are generous enough to allow me to showcase their vision of design.  The Leiela collection is just so beautiful! One thing that certainly stood out at the finals for Mrs Australia Globe were the variety of gowns supplied by Leiela – they were just incredibly elegant. Every lady looked and felt beautiful –  and they were proud to wear such a designer.

5. What kind of qualities do you need to be a ‘Mrs Australia’ pageant competitor?

I really believe you have to be yourself.  When I entered this competition I promised myself not to compare myself to others, not to feel intimidated by others, to be myself and to enjoy the journey. The moment you start trying to be a second rate version of someone else – it is no longer genuine. Stay true to yourself and allow those around you  to love your beautiful qualities. In today’s society so much emphasis is placed on being perfect and looking a certain way. This is not achievable – certainly not when you are trying to compare yourself with those in magazines. Pictures are airbrushed, the lighting is right, the angles are precise – I proudly promote that I am wonderfully imperfect and would not have it any other way.

6. Tell us more about your role with W.I.N Australia. How does this organisation assist women?

I am honoured to be the official spokesperson and ambassador for Women In Need Australia. Women In Need Australia was launched in 2010 and is an outreach of Women In Need International, which was founded by Dr Tracey Kemble in 1996 after she escaped a life of domestic abuse. Women In Need is committed to the emotional health, personal self esteem, empowerment and promotion of a healthy body image for all women. Women In Need offers programmes free of charge to women focusing on self esteem. I am currently building relationships which enable me to introduce Women In Need to new communities. I am very proud to be a part of this, and know that I can dramatically help with the growth of this wonderful charity with the support of my networks.

7. As Mrs Australia, tell us one thing you’d like to say to women to encourage them to try new things.

The experience of being Mrs Australia has literally been life changing. Not just because I won the title, but because I proved to myself that by stepping out of my comfort zone I was able to achieve and accomplish goals I never thought possible. I decided from the beginning of my journey that I would do my all to promote being the best you can be, focussing on the qualities of building confidence, meeting new people and taking the emphasis off outer beauty. I know one thing for sure – if you shine from the inside by being loyal, generous and willing, outer beauty will come without trying. It will be a result of passion within!

8. Name two of your greatest achievements to date, and two difficulties you’ve overcome.

Would absolutely have to be the reward of the crown! But having said this,  I feel that every single lady in the competition was very deserving.  I don’t see that I won it because I was the best, I felt I won the competition because those that were judging could see the passion and vision I have, the importance I place on positive body image.  In terms of achievements – there are so many, more than I could possibly mention.  The opportunities placed in front of me have been unbelievable and are escalating at a fast pace – I am however,  very conscious of ensuring I am approachable and will always make myself available to speak with people, businesses and corporations – big or small – everyone is important.

Two difficulties – I wouldn’t use the word difficult, as I love a challenge and challenges enable you to grow and learn as a person.  Some weeks I make hundreds of calls to businesses to help charities I support, and I do get the “no sorry I cannot help you out”. I accept that it is never personal, I am always polite and thankful for their time. You never know – these same people may choose to support your cause another time – never burn your bridges!  There are people out there that will say you can’t, I always say watch me! Another area I have had to adjust is personal/work balance – I spend a lot of time working and attending events in my role and it is a full time job. My children are now at school,  and I have been a very devoted Mother and Wife (still am!), however it is now my time to put myself out there and help others by being a positive role model. I try to include my family as much as I can in decision making, in fact my husband has just recently taken some leave from work to support me in my role as the face of BMW Sydney Carnival. To have the support of family is so important – this support allows me to focus and shine at events, photoshoots, presentations, media and everything else that goes with the role.

9. How would you describe the Mrs Australia experience in one word?

Life-changing (that is two but I put them together)!

Leiela On The Staging Glamour Experience

At Leiela, we know that everybody loves to feel glamorous. All too often, glamour is reserved for only the most SPECIAL of events – which means that our daily lives aren’t touched by that particular beauty of formal gowns, glittering jewels and regal hair and makeup. The premise that glamour should be more obtainable and more easily accessible was the idea behind Leiela’s addition to L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2012′s Cultural Program. Today’s brief blog wraps up our experience of the event – what we learned, who we met and glammed, and what we’ll be doing for our next ‘glamour meets the street’ project. Thankyou to all those who supported this monumental project for our brand.

Inset: One of our Leiela Staging Glamour girls, emerging from our mobile glamour van!

Who doesn’t love a Cinderella story? The ladies of Melbourne were given an opportunity to be transformed from their normal workday attire into glamorous vixens by the Leiela team. Using Facebook, we promoted to our fans and various Melbourne fashion bloggers that we would be going to several secret locations on a particular day – giving makeovers to lucky participants who visited us – and full gown transformations to one lady at each venue. From Moonee Ponds to Melbourne’s bustling Bourke Street and down to glittering Docklands, we found ladies lining up for a little extra glam in their lives. In collaboration with a veritable treasure-trove of  supporters including photographers, videographers, drivers, movers and talented hair and makeup artists, Leiela Staging Glamour was well under way! Here are the transformations made real – before and after.

What beautiful swans emerged from the Leiela Staging Glamour experience! We finished off the day with a distinctly Miami-style photoshoot on a yacht, kindly supplied by Victorian Yacht Charters. We also worked in collaboration with the Documentary Shop to create a series of reality tv style Staging Glamour episodes, which you can see in full by clicking here.

We then went on to hold a Facebook competition, where fans could vote for their favourite makeover. We certainly learned a lot from the Staging Glamour LMFF 2012 experience! Leiela look forward to bringing more fashion to the street and letting more of our supportive community enjoy a little more glamour in their lives – a little more often. For the Leiela team, being engaged with our community is of paramount importance. Whether it is dressing clients for Logies, Brownlow Medal and sporting events, film and television awards, weddings and special events or hosting runways to support various charities nationally – we’re enthusiastic and can’t wait to be involved. Watch this space for another Leiela glamour to street event in the near future!

The Leiela team in action – ’till next time!

5. What is your favourite Saturday night meal?

Indian, but I haven’t had it in ages!

Gabrielle Chanel- she is my fashion idol.

9. What is something unexpected that has come from your work?

Appreciating the little things in life.

10. Tell us about your upcoming event Staging Glamour at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

It’s a glamorous make-over day. Leiela Introduce…The Tahni Dress!

Leiela Introduce… The Tahni
Dress!

Leiela are well-known for their beautiful formal gowns and luxurious fabrics. As glamorous as they are, they’re not the easiest thing to wear out to a casual lunch with the girls, or a runway fashion event. We’ve been asked by a number of our fans for something glamorous and eye-catching, yet simple enough to throw on over jeans or a slip. In response to this request, we’ve designed the new Tahni overdress – pictured above in eye-catching tangerine (Pantone colour of the year). We’re so excited about Tahni, we’re even giving you the chance to win a new Tahni dress in time for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival!

We just love a luxurious evening gown, and most recently were delighted to dress Virginia Lette and  Leah Granger at the Allan Border Medal. Click here to view photos of the ladies in Leiela on the red carpet, with Phoebe Taylor makeup and Hardy Brothers jewels. Luxe! On days that we’re not called to the red carpet, but still want to look glamorous, Leiela have designed an essential new wardrobe piece – Tahni.

Tahni (close-up, above) is a beautifully draped tunic-style dress which is available in a range of beautiful colours (tiffany blue, royal night, berry purple and more). For extra night-time drama, date-nights out or runway-side at the upcoming L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Tahni comes with extravagant coloured flower corsages (eat your heart out, Sarah Jessica Parker!)

Easy and light to wear during summer, this piece will transition easily to autumn/winter with some layering and long boots. This is the first Leiela piece to be designed for your more casual glamorous days.

GIVEAWAY! We’re offering you the chance to win a new Tahni dress in a colour of your choice! All you need to do is LIKE the official Leiela Facebook page and TAG yourself in the picture below (posted on our Facebook page). Vintage Concept Shoot

I have had this idea bouncing around in my head for some time now, it is the type of image that I think would greatly benefit from a strong stylist, however this first shoot is simply to get the idea out and to start the evolution of the concept.

So here are  the final three images from the shoot…

Ok, and here’s how I did it…

The setup:

1. Camera tethered to lappy

2. Garment being held by a ladder suspended over the studio area, then with clips attached to fishing line. I wanted to use safety pins to hold the fabric in a better position however couldn’t find any at the time.

3. Speedlite with softbox, supported by a light stand that is wedged into another ladder (as I don’t have a boom type stand), the flash is connected to the camera via pocketwizards, (mini TT1 & flex TT5). I have the soft at such an angle so as to through a shadow of the garment onto the floor in view, which I find more realistically creates the sense of the clothing floating in space.

4. White 3 X 5m backdrop by Fotobestway. This backdrop is a good example of the need to try something before you buy. While it probably doesn’t come across in the above photo, the material of the backdrop is quite light and there are slight ripples throughout the entire surface, this is due to how is has been stored rolled up and also how it is sitting on the support. The problem is that because it is such a light material, such ripples cannot be pulled out and flattened. Now this wouldn’t be such a problem if using a full studio lighting setup and shooting high key style portraits or something similar with the background properly lit, however in this situation with a single light source, and the need to retain the shadow, a smoothly backdrop would have saved quite a bit of time in post. Oh well, we shall press on…

Here’s the first image, straight from camera…

1/20 @ f/11  57mm  ISO200

Originally I had the soft box at a lower angle, only slightly above parallel to the garment, however this didn’t create the shadow that I wanted, I then moved to light source higher to cast the objects shadow onto the floor slightly behind and to the right of frame.

And in post..

1. Cropped to 4×5 ratio, (I feel that this ratio ties in with the theme of the image), brightness levels altered in ACR to create more mood.

2. Clean up of fishing line & clips, smoothing of background.

3. Added black and white filter layer with coloured tint, some light D & B

4. Textured background added, masked dress so as not to be covered.

I sourced the textures for this shoot from here.

5. Final image- curves layer added for slight contrast enhancement as well as a vignette layer created by using a layer mask over a curves layer.

My processing for the other two images is very similar to this first so I wont worry with the individual steps for them.

I experimented with having a pair of shoes on the floor below the dress but couldn’t find a natural looking position for them,  perhaps with a stylist this concept could be stretched to a whole outfit and not just the one piece. I could also see movement being employed into the garment, rather than just a stationary pose such as this.

As I mentioned early in the post, this shoot really was to get the idea out of my head and onto the screen for it to develop further, and any critique would be appreciated.
